Sporting Lisbon wonderkid Nuno Mendes has caught the eye of Liverpool FC after his breakthrough development at the Portuguese club over the past season.
The 18-year old left-back has risen through the ranks of Lisbon’s youth development squads to the first-team squad headed by Rúben Amorim. Mendes made his debut for Lisbon’s senior side only three months back in June, however, the defender is touted to have a very bright future lying in front of him.
With the Reds being interested in making a potential move for the teenage starlet, it is believed that the Merseyside giants will have to battle it out with domestic rivals Arsenal for Mendes’s signature next summer. The Gunners too also are reportedly looking for defensive reinforcements following a positive start to Mikel Arteta’s reign as the boss of the North London outfit.
Any deal with Lisbon involving Mendes will not come at a cheap price for either of the interested parties, speculation indicates. The Portuguese side will hold out for the player’s £41 million release clause to be triggered should the English top-flight clubs enquire about the full-back’s availability.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp would be delighted to further fortify the depth of his first-team squad at Anfield after being successful in his attempt to sway Thiago Alcantara’s move to Liverpool FC from Bayern Munich.
