Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for COVID-19, with the Swiss international becoming the third Liverpool FC player to contact the coronavirus after Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane.
In a report published on Liverpoolfc.com, the Merseyside club’s official website, it is stated that the 28-year old Shaqiri was pulled out of the Switzerland national squad ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Croatia, Spain and Germany.
A statement from the Swiss Football Association released confirmed that: “Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for Covid-19. In consultation with the health authorities, he is in isolation.”
The 28-year old Shaqiri was largely tipped to leave the Reds this summer after managing to make just seven Premier League appearances last season for Jurgen Klopp’s side in their title-winning campaign. Despite a fantastic first season at Anfield since his move from Stoke City, Shaqiri had found himself on the fringes of Klopp’s squad ever so often this past year.
However, a move away from Anfield did not materialise for the ex-Inter Milan and Bayern Munich star forward and, as a result, his future in the Liverpool FC shirt looks certain beyond the conclusion of this summer’s transfer window.
