Wales boss Ryan Giggs, an icon amongst the Manchester United fans during his playing days at Old Trafford, has called upon Neco Williams to deal with the criticism being directed towards the full-backs way if he wishes to excel at a major club like Liverpool FC.
The 19-year old was the subject of a number of hate messages posted online across social media platforms following the Reds’ 7-2 win over Lincoln City in the third round of the EFL Cup. Despite the big away victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side, Williams was singled out for his below-par showing at right-back and was held responsible for gifting a goal to the hosts with his uninspiring defensive work.
However, Giggs says that the teenage defender will have to handle the burden of large expectations that comes from the supporters whilst he is playing for a side of Liverpool FC’s stature in world football.
As per reports from LiverpoolEcho, speaking ahead of Wales’ friendly fixture against England, Giggs said, “All you can do is surround yourself with good people, educate yourself as much as you can when it comes to social media, and then it’s your choice whether you want to be a part of it or not.”
“He’s at Liverpool, when you are at a big club you are going to have to take criticism at some point if you set a certain standard and you drop below it. Even for 10 minutes.
“It’s something you have to deal with when you are at big clubs.
Williams is speculated to be in contention of making his first start for the Welsh national team when Gigg’s side takes the pitch against Gareth Southgate’s England on Thursday.
