Liverpool FC loanee Marko Grujic, the Serbian international who joined FC Porto on a season-long deal on deadline day, has reflected upon his desire to sign for the Liga NOS outfit in a chat with Alo!.
The 24-year old Grujic had been a target for a number of Bundesliga clubs in this summer’s transfer window, including the likes of Borussia Monchengladbach and Hertha Berlin. Moreover, a move to Wender Bremen for the midfielder in the dying hours of the transfer window fell through, paving the way for the Reds to loan him out to Porto instead.
Speaking about his potential move to Germany which did not materialize, Grujic said,: “Werder, whose coach [Florian] Kohfeldt is a great friend of Klopp, has been in the story for a long time, but I did not see a perspective there.
“Borussia [Monchengladbach] was a realistic option. [Valentino] Lazaro and [Breel] Embolo praised their coach, [Marco] Rose, to me.
With the player not being keen on staying at Liverpool FC for the duration of this season, due to Jurgen Klopp having several midfield options at his disposal, Grujic chose to sign for FC Porto, a club that that is widely tipped to guarantee first-team football to the Serbian and will also compete in the UEFA Champions League.
“I wanted to be at a stable, ambitious club that plays in the Champions League, and Porto is just that,” he said.
“While I was waiting for the flight to Oslo with the national team in Copenhagen, all the details with the ‘Dragons’ were settled.
“I am convinced that it is the right choice, and the Portuguese club were in a hurry to register me for the Champions League, which they did in the end.”
Since his return to Anfield following the conclusion of a two-year-long loan stint at Hertha Berlin, Grujic had started none of Liverpool FC’s four Premier League fixtures but had been awarded starts in both of the EFL Cup ties for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
