Jurgen Klopp has aimed shots at the Premier League over the tiresome fixture list handed to English top-flight teams who will be participating in the UEFA Champions League as well.
In his post-game interview following Liverpool FC’s Champions League victory against Midtjylland on Tuesday night at Anfield, the Merseyside club’s manager sought to voice his criticism for the Premier League board for the gruesome scheduling of matches to the Reds and their nearest title-challengers Manchester City.
“I think everybody would agree that if you play Tuesday night, you can play the Saturday 12:30pm game, but somehow the Premier League never realises that,” Klopp said in his post-match press conference.
“They always put in the Wednesday night game, like last Saturday, Man City had to play this game – I can’t believe it. We are obviously not friends, we play against each other and fight against each other, but how is that possible?
“Maybe I’m too dumb. Richard Masters and all the others have all said it before; ‘come on, that’s how it is.
“They just aren’t bothered, I don’t understand why.”
Following Tuesday night’s win against their Danish opponents, Liverpool FC are set to play hosts to the high-flying West Ham United on Saturday, just four days prior to making the trip to Italy to face Atalanta in the Group D showdown of the Champions League.
With the upcoming fixtures for the Reds looking far from easy, Klopp has had to endure a number of injury concerns within his first-team ranks, as Virgil van Dijk’s long-term ACL injury was followed up by makeshift centre-back Fabinho having to undergo further assessment on a hamstring injury after the Midtjylland game.
