Liverpool FC’s 7-2 humbling at the hands of Aston Villa early last month proved to be a wakeup call for the Champions of England, said Trent Alexander Arnold ahead of the Reds’ facing Atalanta in Tuesday night’s Champions League fixture.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were subject to a horrific defeat at the hands of the Midlands-based outfit, with Dean Smith’s men shipping seven goals past a clueless Liverpool FC backline over the course of 90 minutes at Villa Park.
Terming the loss as unacceptable by any standards, Arnold explained that Liverpool FC regrouped in a formidable manner post the mid-October international break to record a great run of form ever since, which sees them sit first in the Premier League standings following their 2-1 win against West Ham United on Saturday.
As players you understand something wasn’t right if you concede seven goals in one game,’ Alexander-Arnold said while speaking to reporters, according to the Daily Mail.
‘The main thing was to learn from it. The international break helped us clear our minds. The derby was a decent result and we kicked on from there.
‘There was a meeting, but we always have one. It was more about self-reflection in that period and knowing that can’t happen, to concede seven goals was unacceptable. It humbled us as a team.
‘It let us know we don’t just win because we are Liverpool.’
Arnold himself has been far from his best showings on the right side of the defence since the start of the new season, with the English international hoping to recoup some of that form on the pitch that has established his credentials as one of the best modern-day full-backs in world football.
