Despite a recent run-in with injuries, Liverpool decide not to bolster defensive ranks in January

Recent reports from The Athletic are very likely to alarm a large section of the Liverpool FC fanbase as they claim that Jurgen Klopp will not be induced by the injuries plaguing his squad to dip into the transfer market this coming January and sign additional defenders.

Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have potentially ruled out the centre-back duo from playing again this ongoing season and means that only Joel Matip is the fully fit central defender available at Klopp’s disposal in the Liverpool FC senior squad.

Despite being linked with the likes of Ben White and David Alaba, it is being reported that Klopp will be enticed to instil his faith in youngsters Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams over the course of the 2020-21 campaign and wait for Fabinho’s return to first-team action.

It had been reported previously that the Premier League holders will go into January’s winter transfer window and open their chequebook to bring in one or two defensive options to shore up an injury-depleted backline.

However, it now seems as if Klopp has decided to extend the waiting period until next summer to acquire fresh blood for the defensive core of his title-winning side, with the Liverpool FC supporters hoping that such a decision of the German does not come back to haunt the Merseysiders in the near future.
