Leon Goretzka has admitted in a recent interview that he did turn down a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC when he was considering his options after deciding to leave Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke in 2018’s summer transfer window.
The German international ended up signing for Bayern Munich, where he has developed into one of the most highly-rated midfield stars playing across Europe, even clinching treble-winning glory last season as Hansi Flick’s men stormed to the domestic double in rapid succession, and wrapped up the UEFA Champions League trophy by beating PSG 1-0 in the final.
While speaking to the The Athletic, Goretzka did confirm that the Reds were chasing his signature when speculation was rife that he was planning to exit Schalke, however, joining Bayern Munich seemed much more convincing to the central midfielder.
“They were a consideration, of course.
“They’re a great club, and their development since Klopp came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title.
“But I took a long time making my decision, and I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”
Fast forward to the summer of 2020, Jurgen Klopp’s side managed to secure the much-coveted signing of Goretzka’s treble-winning teammate, Thiago Alcantara, on a long-term deal from the Bundesliga giants and despite recent injury troubles for the Spanish playmaker, his addition to Klopp’s Anfield ranks fulfils the much-needed presence for creative influence in the Liverpool FC midfield.
