Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp has called for the Premier League to keep on running despite the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across a number of clubs in English top-flight football.
And amid the recent calls of an implementation of a “circuit-breaker” shutdown to temporarily halt the proceedings of the Premier League, Klopp voiced support for the measures already put in place to prevent the spread of the pandemic virus in the country.
Klopp said that the self-isolation measures were being followed rigorously by his players, however, the German coach admitted that he would be obligated to pay heed to any further guidelines should the situation take a drastic turn towards the worst.
“We go to the training ground and stuff like that but usually we isolate. We try to do everything to keep the boys as safe as possible so I think we really can carry on. We all try to do our best to keep the competition going. I think it works well for everybody but I’m not a [medical] specialist and I will respect all the decisions made in the next few weeks.”
“We knew before the winter there would probably be a second wave,” said Klopp, as quoted by The Guardian.
“It’s a challenge when it is about self-isolation so I am not surprised that the numbers have gone up slightly in football.”
The Merseysiders are due to face high-flying Southampton next in league action next week after two consecutive draws of late, last weekend against West Brom and a goalless stalemate on the road to Newcastle have left the defending champions just three points ahead of Manchester United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side playing hosts to Aston Villa on Friday evening.
