Juventus defender Merih Demiral attracts interest from Liverpool

Juventus’ centre-back Merih Demiral has emerged on Liverpool FC’s transfer radar in the wake of calls made for Jurgen Klopp to use the ongoing January window to add to his injury-hit options in defence.

Demiral has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular for Andrea Pirlo’s side and with the UEFA Euros scheduled for later this year, the highly-rated defender remains keen for more game-time.

Liverpool FC’s requirement of additional options in the heart of the backline has never fallen upon so urgently on the Merseysiders, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez understood to be recovering from potential season-ending injury layoffs, coupled with Joel Matip’s recurring issues on the injury front.

Jurgen Klopp’s decision to slot in skipper Jordan Henderson at centre-back for Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton was subject to mixed reactions from many, including ex-Red Jamie Carragher, who has time and again urged his old club to sign a centre-back this January to stay in the mix for a second successive top-flight title.

Reports from Fanatik suggest that the Anfield outfit’s interest in Demiral would be tested strongly heading further into the month-long transfer window, with Juventus believed to be wanting a fee in the region of €50 million to part ways with the 22-year-old international central defender.
