Southampton’s Jan Vestergaard the answer to Liverpool’s injury problems, says Martin Keown

A host of centre-back names have been linked with a move to Anfield following the January transfer window’s opening but Jurgen Klopp has reasserted time and again of uncertainty surrounding his side’s plans for the month-long period.

Former Arsenal man Martin Keown reckons that Southampton central defender Jan Vestergaard could very well be the answer to Liverpool FC’s injury-depleted backline, with the 28-year-old enjoying a superb start to the 2020-21 season playing for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Saints.

Southampton’s terrific form across the Premier League campaign so far has been largely attributed to the centre-back pairing of Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek as both players have been instrumental in maintaining a perfect show of defensive ability even when coming up against the star-studded frontlines of the Big Six in English top-flight football.

Keown’s recent comments serve as an indication of the ex-England international believing that Vestergaard’s potential addition to the first-team ranks at Anfield could come of enormous benefit to the Merseyside Reds, who have faced an ever-increasing number of troubles on the injury front midway into the season.

“I was looking at Vestergaard playing for Southampton, and I will say this on record, I have not seen a better central defender this season,” Keown said, as quoted by the Express.

“I looked at his contract situation, I’m not trying to cause a problem for Southampton, and I thought that maybe that would be a player that Jurgen Klopp would go after.”

“He has been brilliant this season. He is injured at the moment. But it doesn’t appear as if Jurgen is going to do that.”

“He’s got youngsters there, Phillips, Rhys Williams, at the moment he’s playing two midfield players in that position which will take away from the confidence of those young men as well so it’s not an easy solution for him at the moment.”
