Club legend Jamie Carragher speaks out on Liverpool’s troubles on the pitch

Liverpool FC’s faltering form on the pitch was narrowed down to lack of quality signings made by boss Jurgen Klopp in recent times by former club man Jamie Carragher.

The Sky Sports pundit was vocal in his opinion on Liverpool FC’s squad depth, according to reports from Metro, as he urged Klopp to add three big-name reinforcements to his first-team ranks in the summer to push for the top-flight crown once again next season.

Carragher pointed out the need for a first-team name in the centre-back spot, which has been a major issue for Klopp after long-term injury problems for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, besides noting that the Reds gaffer would be required to look at replacements for Gini Wijnaldum’s potential exit from Anfield this summer.

Moreover, a downward spiral in the form in front of the goal for the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane would convince Klopp to add to his existing options upfront, said the ex-Red.

‘Initially, when Jurgen Klopp came in, Liverpool were a team who were sixth or seventh,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

‘His first summer he brought in three players – Joel Matip, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Sadio Mane. That then took them into the Champions League.

‘Over the next 12 months he then brought in Mohamed Salah in the summer, Virgil van Dijk in the January and Alisson on the back of the 2018 Champions League final. That then took them on again, to the Champions League win and the title. ‘

I think Liverpool are back at that stage where they need those three players to come in again to give them that jolt.

‘I still think they will be back but they need three players. ‘They need a centre-back, maybe he’s joined now in Ozan Kabak, they need someone to replace Wijnaldum, and they need someone in the front three.

‘And I’m not talking about players on the bench. I’m talking about players to come into the team like Matip, Wijnaldum, and Mane did, like Salah, Van Dijk, and Alisson. That’s what Liverpool need.’

Klopp’s men were on the receiving end of yet another defeat at home territory over the past weekend, with table-toppers Manchester City securing their first win at Anfield in nearly 18 years to extend their lead over the Reds to ten points at the summit.
