Gini Wijnaldum has insisted that he remains focused on delivering his best for an under-fire Liverpool FC outfit even as the Dutchman’s long-term future at Anfield continues to hang in the balance.
The 30-year-old’s current deal in the Reds shirt runs out this summer and Jurgen Klopp has been unable to convince his key midfield regular to sign on extended terms.
With FC Barcelona leading the race to sign the former Newcastle United man, speculation is rife that the Holland international is stalling his agreement on a new deal in the hopes of being offered a major wage bump.
According to reports from the Mirror, Wijnaldum in a recent interview has asserted that nothing is certain as of now pertaining to his stay at Anfield beyond the summer transfer window, with the player adding that his focus lies solely on lifting his side out of their ongoing slump of form in top-flight action.
“If you’re a fan and you support the team – you support the player and what they do with me,” Wijnaldum said.
“You want to hear what’s going to happen but on the other side, for me, if there’s nothing to say and no news I cannot say something.
“I hope they can understand that and I hope they will stay patient until there’s news.
“The most important thing right now is that we fix things in the game as a team and we get results.
“Talking about an individual, in this case about me and my contract situation – because I just said there’s no news, I think we can focus on better things than on my situation.
“When there is news, we will bring it out.”
