Thiago Alcantara speaks out on Liverpool’s ambitions for the Champions League

Liverpool FC midfield star Thiago Alcantara has admitted that the Merseysiders have faltered massively across their ongoing top-flight campaign but hopes of a Champions League title are prevalent among those at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have endured a miserable defence of their Premier League crown, have put in a spirited shift when playing in Europe’s elite club competition and booked their place in the quarter-finals courtesy of the recent win over RB Leipzig.

According to the former Bayern Munich man, the showing against Leipzig on Wednesday night at the Puskas Arena provides the Reds with much-needed confidence heading into Monday’s away fixture at Wolves as Klopp and Co. strive to ensure their top-four status ahead of the likes of Chelsea and West Ham United.

‘It’s been a tough period for all of us because we didn’t expect in our worst nightmares we would be in this position in the Premier League but we try to perform as best we can and try to get better,’ he told the club’s official website.

‘After this performance it is positive for all of us.’

‘It will help, that’s how it is. It will help but we know that Monday at Wolves is a different kind of game.’

‘But if we play as good as we played (against Leipzig) then it will be tough for Wolves, that’s clear.

‘But then we have to score and we have to defend, we have to deny them and we have to break through on the other side and all these kind of things.

‘We played a really good first half but we didn’t score with really big chances. The game was a little bit like a summary of our season: so we are good, we create chances but we don’t finish them off often enough.

Thiago was himself at his best during the outing in Budapest, with the Spanish international having been the subject of widespread criticism following his under-fire showings since signing for Liverpool FC last summer.
