Jurgen Klopp admits ’empty’ Anfield could prove difficult for comeback against Real Madrid

The absence of the Liverpool FC fanbase flocking the Anfield stands for Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid could make things difficult for the Reds to stage a comeback, admits Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp’s men are trailing their Spanish counterparts by two goals following last week’s 3-1 defeat on the road but Liverpool FC do enjoy the luxury of an away goal which was secured through Mohammad Salah last time around in Madrid.

Speaking to reporters in his pre-match press conference ahead of the midweek tie at home to Zinedine Zidane’s men, Klopp said that a potential comeback is not to be taken for granted and that such events that have unfolded in the past did not provide the case for its repetition.

‘We will see. Some of the boys were involved in these games [against Dortmund and Barcelona].

‘You cannot take it for granted, you never should and could. You don’t get a comeback because you had a comeback in the past.

‘You have to play really good football in the present. The best situation is when you’re not in a situation when you need a comeback.

‘But the situation is clear and that’s why this competition is so interesting because you have rules like the away goals and it makes it really exciting.

‘We should not concede and then if we can create more than in Madrid, and that should be possible because we didn’t create too much, we will see what we can do.

‘When you’re 3-1 down, it looks like you’re already out. We will give it a try. I think that’s the job we have to do and that’s exactly how we will go for it.

‘We cannot just take comebacks for granted, especially not without a crowd in the stadium. We have to create out own atmosphere.’

Following the defeat to Real Madrid, the Reds had responded well when turning out in Premier League action over the past weekend as goals from Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold helped stage a victory against Aston Villa despite the Midlanders having gone ahead in the first-half through Ollie Watkins.

Salah found the equaliser after which it all came down to Alexander-Arnold’s superb strike in stoppage time to seal the win for Liverpool FC thereby cutting short a six-game-long losing run at home for the Merseysiders.
