Played-turned-pundit Kevin Phillips reckons that Leeds United could position themselves as candidates to land the signature of Liverpool forward player Divock Origi in this summer’s transfer window.
Origi has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield ahead of the start of the new season with the Belgium international falling down the pecking order at the club over the last couple of campaigns.
The big-money arrival of Diogo Jota on Merseyside last summer from Wolves and his subsequent great run of form for Jurgen Klopp’s men has made the Portuguese wide player the go-to man for Klopp to provide cover for the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
With Origi enduring a dismal run of form in the front of the goal when given the minutes on the pitch, Liverpool are looking to offload the 25-year-old this summer and Phillips has backed Leeds United to sign the player in a cut-price deal.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Sunderland man said that to bring in some much-needed competition for the first-choice striking option in Patrick Bamford, the Elland Road outfit could eye up a deal for Origi who is surplus to requirements at Anfield.
“We saw with Bamford last season, at the end he looked tired. He wasn’t the same player he was earlier in the season.”
“That comes from playing too much football. They might look for a player who could play wide and through the middle.
“Maybe someone like Divock Origi. Maybe Leeds could nick in and get him from Liverpool. At that price [£15-20m]? Certainly.
“With the time left in the window, I think we will see Leeds move for him, or a player like that.”
