Aston Villa have confirmed the appointment of Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard as their new manager with Gerrard calling it quits at Rangers.
Gerrard takes the top job at Villa Park which had become vacant following the sacking of Dean Smith with the Midlanders in deep trouble after five defeats on the trot in Premier League action.

The former Reds and England midfield maestro was announced as the new gaffer for Aston Villa with Gerrard leaving Scottish outfit Rangers after spending more than three years at the helm at Ibrox and achieving title-winning glory last season.
His name had been considered to be top of the wishlist for the Villa board who were quick to start the hunt for Smith’s successor with the club in deep disarray as only two points separated them from the relegation zone in the league standings.
The new boss will take charge of his side for the first time in league action against the high-flying Brighton side come November 20 with a trip to his former ground Anfield scheduled for December 11.
