The home side were in for an early setback when Leicester talisman Jamie Vardy made his darting run behind the Liverpool backline to slot home the opening goal.

Vardy was once again on target just four minutes after his first to double the advantage for Brendan Rodger’s men and the striker could well have found his third only to be denied by the post.

Liverpool pulled one back to get back in the game with midfield man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain finding the back of the net with a fine strike into the top corner.

Leicester restored the two-goal advantage with James Maddison 25-yard stunner as Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the interval with a sizable deficit.

Diogo Jota was one of the changes rung in by Klopp at half-time and the Portuguese wide man was set up by strike partner Takumi Minamino for Liverpool’s second goal of the game.

Minamino left it late to level the affair as the Japan international made the most of Leicester’s defensive lapse of judgement to net the equaliser.

Luke Thomas was the first to miss from the spot in the resulting shootout but the goalscorer Minamino sent his effort wide. Ryan Bertrand was denied by Kelleher and it all came down to Jota to send Liverpool into the semi-finals.
