Former Liverpool star Graeme Souness has revealed that Manchester City is still favorites to win the Premier League title because the Reds need a better midfield.
Premier League champions Manchester City are currently sitting on top of the League table but Pep Guardiola’s side is still level on points with Liverpool in 2nd place. However, one contrasting factor between the two side’s is the number of goals scored which puts City ahead of Liverpool as the two clubs have conceded just three goals throughout the campaign.
Manchester City has netted 26 times while Klopp’s Liverpool has scored just 16 goals nine Premier League games into the season. This is without Liverpool’s top scorers finding their feet, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are yet to move out of first gear and Souness believes that the midfield is the reason why Liverpool are unable to score freely.
The 65-year-old Scotsman who speaks as a pundit on Monday Night Football stated that Klopp probably knows that his midfield needs improvement if they are to challenge against title rivals Manchester City. Souness said, “I think [concern about midfield] is how Jurgen sees it as well. He signed two midfield players this summer and went for Nabil Fekir from Lyon as the third. That tells you he thinks he needs to strengthen. I think that’s what it is.”
Liverpool had to struggle against Huddersfield Town this weekend in order to get three points but if they were more clinical the game could have been less nervy towards the end.
Souness also explained as to why City are favorites and the difference in Liverpool’s midfield in comparison, “They have three real workaholics in there, but I don’t think they’ve got anyone in there who is really cute and clever, like a David Silva or a Kevin De Bruyne. But these are hard players to find.”
Liverpool takes on Red Star Belgrade at Anfield On Wednesday night in a Champions League encounter hoping to top Group C.
