According to the latest reports, Liverpool is prepared to open talks regarding a new contract extension for central defender Joe Gomez.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is currently in second place on the Premier League table but are level on points with table toppers and champions Manchester City. But Pep Guardiola’s side has a much better goal difference which keeps them ahead and favorites for the title. Manchester City has scored 26 times in the Premier League while Liverpool has netted just 16 as their forwards are just finding their feet.
But both sides have conceded just three goals and that has been down to the massive improvement in Klopp’s back line. Liverpool has grown massively in stature since the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk in January but one key player this season has been English defender Joe Gomez who has slotted alongside the Dutchman quite superbly in the heart of the defense.
Having put in some solid displays already during the early stages of the season, Liverpool has been immensely impressed by Joe Gomez’ performances and are keen to tie him down to the club for a longer period.
The reports claim that Liverpool has already contacted Gomez’ representatives in order to negotiate a deal with the Englishman. The 21-year-old is now realizing his potential and living up to it after enduring a difficult start in his career due to injury woes.
Gomez’ current deal that he signed back in January 2017 expires in the summer of 2022 but he earns only £10,000 a week and Liverpool may want to increase those wages to thank him for his services so far. Liverpool will have thanked their lucky stars for purchasing him at just £3.5 million from Charlton Athletic back in the summer of 2015.
Gomez has also been able to keep out fullback Trent Alexander Arnold over the past few weeks and has started eight of Liverpool’s nine Premier League games so far.
