Liverpool have all to play for in what remains of their Premier League campaign

Liverpool have all to play for in what remains of their Premier League campaign with the battle against Manchester City for the top-flight crown going right down to the wire.

Jurgen Klopp’s Merseysiders picked up a 2-0 win on the road to a high-flying Arsenal before heading into the international break and the result meant that Liverpool moved just one point adrift of the league leaders Manchester City who were held to a nil-nil stalemate against Crystal Palace earlier in the week.

The first and second in the standings have a crunch tie awaiting them come April 10 when the defending champions of the land Manchester City, who remain as eager as ever to retain the title, welcome Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium in what promises to be a high-billed fixture that is backed to determine the outcome of the domestic season.

Jordan Henderson and Co. are competing for every trophy out there and with the Carabao Cup already in the bag thanks to that thriller of a game against Chelsea, confidence would be renewed amongst the Liverpool players that a much-hyped quadruple – the unprecedented feat of clinching the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in one season, is very much a possibility.

Perhaps the most important trophy the Reds are out for remains the Premier League crown with last season’s timid defence from Liverpool opening the door for arch rivals Manchester City to reclaim the title as injuries and inconsistency in form hampered hopes at Anfield for back to back league titles.

An upsurge in form, however, has been on the show from the Liverpool ranks this season and many believe, including the Liverpool great Jamie Carragher, that Klopp’s men are the strong favourites to pip Pep Guardiola’s City to top flight glory and match Manchester United’s record of 20.

The players have never been in better form across departments at Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk-marshalled backline have been on top form of late with the Dutchman himself at his brilliant best after last season’s anterior cruciate ligament injury which left him on the sidelines for the majority of the campaign. Van Dijk’s centre-back partner Joel Matip has earned the ravest of reviews for his stellar displays at the back while the full-back pairing of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have kept the Liverpool attacking lineup at their feet with inswinging deliveries into the box.

In the centre of the park, Spain international Thiago Alcantara’s run in with injury niggles has not played spoilsport to his flair on the pitch with his return to the Liverpool fold coming at just the right time for the business end of the campaign. Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Kloppp’s other go-to men in the midfield slots, have put out consistent displays week in and week out.

Mohamed Salah, despite his Anfield future hanging in the balance amid a long drawn out contract standoff, shows no signs of tiring himself out in front of the goal with the Egyptian leading the goalscoring charts in the Premier League with 20 strikes to his name. New boy Luis Diaz has adapted well to life on Merseyside after making the January move from Porto while the likes of Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane and the returning Roberto Firmino have kept the opposition defences busy.

All this makes for a promising conclusion to the 2021-22 Premier League campaign with Manchester City proving to be the fiercest of competitors for Klopp’s Liverpool as we await the April 10 showdown between two top teams in a game that should spell out the remainder of the season.
