A much-changed Reds XI started the game on the front foot and reaped rewards with a well-earned lead through central defender Ibrahima Konate.

The Frenchman outjumped City defender Nathan Ake to head home from Andy Robertson’s corner and give his side the lead which was soon to be doubled.

Sadio Mane closed down City shot-stopper Zack Steffen who took too long with John Stones’ pass and invited trouble from the Liverpool forward to put in a sliding challenge that bundled the ball into the back of the net.

Mane was ever-present in the opening 45 minutes and the Senegalese winger made it two for himself on Saturday afternoon after Thiago’s sublime scooped pass found him to the right of the penalty area.

City were the more dominant of the two teams when the second period got underway and Jack Grealish pulled one back for his side following Gabriel Jesus teeing up the former.

Alisson Becker was called into action to deny his compatriot Jesus twice in quick succession with City hoping to amp up the pressure on Liverpool.

Salah missed a glorious opportunity in the attacking third while on the other end of the pitch, Bernardo Silva tapped in at the back post to reduce the deficit to just one goal.

Liverpool, however, got past the finish line to claim a memorable semi-final win over their arch-rivals and secure a return to Wembley for the next month.
