Liverpool ended the season on a bittersweet note with a 3-1 win over Wolves at Anfield but the result was not enough for them to clinch the Premier League crown with Manchester City emerging winners over Aston Villa.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
The home side were in for a horrid start to the Anfield showdown with Wolves winger Pedro Neto finding the back of the net from close range in the third minute.
A lacklustre defensive display from Liverpool allowed Raul Jimenez to run in behind the backline and the Mexican striker teed up Neto to make it 1-0 for the Midlanders.
Luis Diaz could have levelled the affair but Jose Sa came out on top in the one-on-one situation with the Liverpool forward denied by the Wolves stopper.
The visitors were inches away from doubling their advantage through Leander Dendoncker who shot his effort wide and moments later Liverpool made no mistake in grabbing the equaliser.
Thiago Alcantara’s sublime backheel set up Sadio Mane to slot past Sa with Liverpool heading into the break with the scoreline at 1-1.
James Milner was the halftime change for Liverpool in place of the injured Thiago Alcantara as Mane’s early strike in the second period ruled out for offside.
Salah was brought off the bench around the hour mark by Klopp and the Egyptian left it late, six minutes from time, to score after Matip’s header was cleared off the line.
Andy Robertson added to the scoreline in the dying embers to rubber-stamp the three points for Liverpool, which, unfortunately, did not prove to be the title-winning result for Klopp and his players.
