Liverpool have opened talks with defender Joe Gomez for a new long-term deal amid increasing speculation over the player’s future at the club.
Gomez has recently struggled for regular game time in the Liverpool shirt and there were rumours doing the rounds that Premier League side Aston Villa were keen on moving in for the 25-year-old centre-back this summer.
According to new development as reported by Sky Sports News, however, Jurgen Klopp is planning to table an extension for his first-team defensive talent which is said to be a priority task for the incoming sporting director Julian Ward.
It is also claimed that there has been no contact made with the Liverpool camp by Villa Park over a swoop for Gomez’s signature in the summer transfer window despite Villa head coach Steven Gerrard being credited with a strong interest in the Englishman.
Gomez has found it hard to force himself back into Klopp’s team sheet on a regular basis since his recovery from a serious knee injury two years ago coupled with the arrival of France international Ibrahima Konate last summer.
