Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as strong contenders for signing rumoured Liverpool target Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.
The Spain international attacking midfielder is on the fringes of the Real camp and has been heavily linked with a move away from Santiago Bernebeu with just 12 months left on his current terms.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have time and again been credited with a strong interest in moving in for Asensio’s signature and it seems that the Reds now have competition in their pursuit of the player with Newcastle United keeping close tabs on the Spaniard, according to a report from AS.
Asensio is keen to stay put at the Bernabeu beyond the end of the 2022-23 campaign but the attacker knows that he has no shortage of big-name suitors in the transfer market with Liverpool joined by the likes of AC Milan and Newcastle in the chase.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are unlikely to intensify efforts to bring Asensio to Anfield anytime in the near future following the capture of the 22-year-old Darwin Nunez earlier this year in a club record transfer.
