Liverpool vs Manchester City- Man of the Match: Darwin Nunez

How’s that for a debut!

Liverpool lifted the Community Shield trophy after sixteen long years. The trophies keep on showering for the Anfield side as they simply wept past the Premier League champions Manchester City.

Klopp brought his marque signing Darwin Nunez on for Roberto Firmino who was having a tough time adapting to the game. So to strengthen what Klopp already had on the pitch, he gave the Uruguayan the green light. Liverpool players were all over the City players. The tactics were top-notch and not even a single error was committed. Julian Alvarez, the Argentine striker for City equalised within ten minutes making the score line even.

No sooner did the Uruguayan player step up the King Power Stadium pitch, he instantly became a fan favourite. He capped a brilliant appearance off the bench, and then, later on, went on to score a stoppage-time goal to secure the title. Nunez could have scored at least two goals if City didn’t have their gallant goalkeeper(Ederson). The first time Nunez got a touch on the ball he was inches close to head the ball in, but unfortunately, it went straight to Ederson’s gloves.

In the 83rd minute of the game, a clumsy Ruben Dias handball was deemed a clear penalty after a VAR check. Hadn’t Darwin Nunez made that header so fast then it wouldn’t have been possible. Darwin put himself in the right position to outsmart the defender who left him completely free. The powerful header hit Dias’ hand. It was surely a well-thought strategy that worked out just fine.

Seven minutes were added on. The atmosphere inside the stadium slowly started to be nervous as City kept on putting pressure.

In the 90+4th minute, a curving lofted through ball from Salah and then another headed pass from Robertson once again found Nunez at the right position to put that ball inside the net and secure the victory once in for all. A joyous evening for the fans and team and most importantly Nunez himself who made an instant impact as soon as he stepped up.

Nunez is looking to be the perfect replacement for Sadio Mane who shared a similar kind of trait of finding the right spaces and scoring goals from tight angles. Nunez is the man whose going to make up for it. With the Premier League starting from this week Nunez, Salah and Luis Diaz are going to be a dominating trio and many teams won’t even know what’s going to happen to them when these three play together.
