Gabriel Agbonlahor has lambasted Liverpool’s marquee summer signing Darwin Nunez for his poor displays since his start to life at Anfield.
Nunez joined Jurgen Klopp’s Reds in the summer transfer window from Benfica with the Premier League bigwigs forking out a potential club record fee of £85 million to land the in-demand Uruguayan forward.
The 23-year-old, however, has endured a run of patchy form in front of the goal for his new side and has come under the scanner of the former Aston Villa frontman Gabriel Agbonlahor for failing to meet the expectations that had surrounded his big-money transfer.
He has faltered when compared to the likes of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Arsenal man Gabriel Jesus with the latter two also, according to Agbonlahor’s recent remarks.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the player-turned-pundit has come out with scathing criticism of the Liverpool new boy who has been branded a flop singing for the Anfield camp and compared to Chelsea’s on-loan forward Romelu Lukaku.
“Best signing is Gabriel Jesus for me. Haaland has been outstanding, but City always did well without Haaland, scored ridiculous goals without Haaland.
“Gabriel Jesus has turned Arsenal into something else. They have got a striker now who doesn’t labour when he is pressing defenders.
“I just look at Haaland and even when he’s not having a good game, he’ll leap in the air and tap one in. He’s like from a different planet.
“When I look at Nunez, I feel that even his first touch doesn’t look great.
“We were quick to call Lukaku ‘Timberland boots’, that was trending on Twitter when he was having bad touches in games. But Nunez looks like he’s got two pairs of Timberlands on.”
