James Milner provides cover in the right-back role for an injury-hit Liverpool side who are also without Ibrahima Konate for the game against the defending champions Manchester City.
Injuries to the defensive trio of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate force Jurgen Klopp to draft the veteran Milner in his backline for the Anfield showdown on Sunday.
Gomez shifts to centre-back
The English defender had slotted in the right-back position midweek in the 7-1 win over Rangers but with Konate sidelined, the former pairs up alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the four-man Liverpool defence.
Andy Robertson returns from his spell out injured and replaces Kostas Tsimikas in the starting XI in a much-needed boost for the home side.
Harvey Elliott retains his starting berth
Elliott was a joy to watch in Liverpool’s riot of Rangers earlier in the week and the youngster keeps his place on the team sheet with Jordan Henderson dropping down to the bench to make way for Thiago.
In the attacking third of the pitch, Diogo Jota joins Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah with Darwin Nunez starting on the bench.
Here is how both teams line up for today’s Premier League fixture:
