The home side enjoyed the greater share of chances going forward in the early stages of Wednesday night’s Anfield showdown with Roberto Firmino shooting wide.
Nunez called West Ham goalie Lukasz Fabianski into action with a good save after Thiago Alcantara had teed up the former with a ball over the top.
Fabianski, however, was in no position to deny the Liverpool frontman from finding the back of the net who headed home from a Kostas Tsimikas delivery.
Liverpool could have doubled their lead with Nunez on target this time as well but his effort was beaten away by Fabianski and another strike minutes later crashed against the woodwork.
West Ham were given an opportunity to level the affair heading into the break when Joe Gomez brought down Bowen inside the box only for the latter to have his spot kick saved by Alisson Becker.
The Reds were the more dominant of sides in the second period also and Firmino came quite close to making it 2-0 as Aaron Cresswell got an important touch to keep the Brazilian’s shot out.
Liverpool survived a scare in the final moments of the game when substitute James Milner denied Soucek from scoring after Bowen had set up the midfielder.
