The visitors had a great chance through in goal in the opening minutes when Harvey Elliott’s ball into the box was brought down brilliantly by Fabio Carvalho who forced Dean Henderson to make a good stop.

Firmino then went close with his header from a James Milner cross going wide while Alisson Becker had a couple of routine saves to make at the other end of the pitch.

Liverpool’s big chance came just before the break when Virgil van Dijk was free at the back post only for his headed effort to come back across the goal.

Nottingham Forest had a break early on in the second period which earned them a free kick and eventually the goal to break the deadlock which lasted for nearly an hour.

Former Liverpool striker Awoniyi was at the right place at the right time to poke home the opener past Alisson Becker after the latter had kept out the initial effort.

Dean Henderson was crucial for Nottingham to hang onto their slender lead in the later stages of the game with the goalkeeper denying Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk from leveling the affair.
