Second-half strikes from Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah secured an important win for the Champions League hopefuls Liverpool in midweek’s Anfield contest against Wolves.

Both sides made a lively start with chances on goal in the opening five minutes as Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson Becker was called into action to palm away Joao Moutinho’s effort.
Tsimikas had his ball into the box cut out by Wolves defender Craig Dawson and Fabinho further upped the pressure on the Wolves backline but he was unable to find a teammate.
Van Dijk produced a crucial block on a strike from Raul Jimenez while on the other end of the pitch, Harvey Elliott was offered a brilliant chance to open the scoring only for him to head it down and wide from close range.
The Liverpool starlet again came close to finding the back of the net, this time with a near-post hit from Nunez’s chest off as Wolves goalie Sa was able to turn it behind.
In the second period, Jota was denied from getting a clear strike by Max Kilman a pass from Nunes had deflected into the former’s path on the edge of the box.
Nunez slotted in from close range but the strike was chalked off following a VAR check with Jota adjusted offside in the build up to the goal.
Liverpool did not have to wait for long to take the lead with Virgil van Dijk heading after Jota had turned the ball back in the box from Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick.
Tsimikas was brilliant in the build up to the second goal as the Greek full-back teed up Mo Salah to rubber stamp the win for the hosts.
