Virgil van Dijk headed a deep corner kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold across goal which was going into the back of the net until an important intervention came from Jefferson Lerma.
On the other end of the pitch, the home side nearly found the opener through Dango Ouattara who rounded Alisson Becker but could only hit the side netting.
Bournemouth goalie Neto denied Andy Robertson’s strike from close range and Gakpo slotted the ball home from an offside position.
The hosts were the ones who broke the deadlock to much surprise as Billing arrived in the middle of the area to score past Alisson and give his side a well deserved lead before the break.
Liverpool had Diogo Jota coming off the bench at half time as Klopp hoped that the substitution could reap rewards for his side who were trailing by a goal to nil.
The Portuguese forward instantly made an impact and forced a decent save from Neto with a strike for inside the right post.
Three changes for the visitors – Roberto Firmino, Henderson and James Milner coming on to replace Nunez, Fabinho and Alexander-Arnold also helped Liverpool find their way back in the game as seconds later, Klopp’s men were awarded a penalty after Jota’s back-post header was blocked by the arm of Adam Smith.
Salah, however, made a mess of his spot kick as the Egyptian sent it wide of the goal to the left which made it all but certain that Liverpool would leave the south coast with nothing.
