Premier League giants Liverpool has been advised not to sign Chelsea’s Mason Mount in the summer. Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that the midfielder is not the player the Reds need in the middle of the pitch as he is too inconsistent.
Mount’s current contract is slated to expire next summer. Fabrizio Romano earlier reported that although discussions for an extension have been underway, no agreement has yet been reached.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is also rumored to be looking for a midfielder this summer and is reportedly interested in Mount. However, Liverpool are also interested in signing the English playmaker.
Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham was extensively linked to a move to Anfield. But he was recently dropped from the Reds’ pursuit. Liverpool is currently trying to improve their options in the midfield region.

This season, Mount has made 24 Premier League appearances for the Blues, making three goals and two assists. He has played 195 games for Chelsea, scoring 33 goals and providing 37 assists. He has twice been named the team’s Player of the Season.
However, Agbonlahor believes that Mount should score more goals and his numbers are decent until now. While talking to talkSport, he said:
“He scored 27 goals in 129 appearances, it’s not fantastic is it, let’s be honest here. The stats show that he’s not. He’s an okay player but he’s not doing outstanding.”
“Mason Mount is an attacking midfielder, he should be scoring goals. He brings nothing. [Arsenal’s Martin] Odegaard’s got 14 goals in one season.”
The opinions of Agbonlahor won’t worry Liverpool fans too much. Instead, they would be excited about the possibilities of Mount playing for them.
He may not be the most productive player, but at Liverpool, that would scarcely be his role. The Reds already have a plenty of goal scorers in that area with Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Diogo Jota all leading the line.
Therefore, Mount shouldn’t have to worry about scoring goals at Anfield. It’s much more likely that his main aim will be to press higher up the pitch and provide maximum assists to his side.
