Manuel Ugarte’s agent admitted that Liverpool are interested in his client with the competition to sign the Sporting Lisbon man heating up ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Reds are desperate to overhaul their squad over the summer and the highly rated Ugarte has caught the attention of the Liverpool top brass who are keen on the midfielder’s signature.
According to a report from The Daily Mirror, Ugarte’s agent, Jorge Chijane, said that the 22-year-old is expected to leave Sporting this summer and that super agent Jorge Mendes be key to brokering a deal for the transfer.
“It is almost certain that he will leave,” Chijane said. “I’ll be in Lisbon soon. I trust Jorge Mendes, who is the best businessman in the world. In fact, when I told him about Ugarte for the first time, he said: ‘Your eyes are my eyes’.
“There is a lot of talk, but they are not the only club [Liverpool], there are others.
“There’s a lot of talk, but I’m still not sure about the club [Ugarte will join]. There are many hypotheses on the table. I believe that in 15 days the situation will be resolved.”
Liverpool are understood to have him on their shortlist of midfielders with Jurgen Klopp looking to reinforce his options in the centre of the park by bringing in a fresh pair of legs.
Klopp also has Real Madrid maestro Aurélien Tchouaméni on his wish list a year after the Frenchman decided to make the move to the Bernabeu rather than sign for the Reds.
