PSG signing Marco Asensio reportedly rejected a move to Anfield last week

Spanish midfielder Marco Asensio turned down offers from Liverpool and Chelsea before deciding to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old who had been with Real Madrid for nine years after joining from Mallorca, chose PSG over the Premier League clubs.

According to AS, he had an offer from Liverpool and Chelsea but opted for a move to the French champions instead. The decision to join PSG was driven by the assurance of regular playing time with the French club.

Asensio is currently in Paris and is close to finalizing the deal with PSG. The official announcement of his signing is expected in the coming days.

The Spanish star has chosen to reject Real Madrid’s offer for a new contract and instead opt for a Bosman move to PSG, the reigning champions of Ligue 1.

Asensio, a skillful left-footed player known for his vision and shooting ability, is expected to undergo a medical test in Paris shortly. He is on the verge of finalizing a deal with PSG worth €10 million per year until 2027.

With the imminent departure of Lionel Messi and potential sale of Neymar, Marco Asensio is expected to play a significant role in the French giant’s squad. He could be utilized as a right winger or an advanced playmaker.

If Asensio had joined Liverpool, he would have served as a backup to Mohamed Salah on the right flank. However, at Chelsea, given their abundance of attacking options, it would have been challenging for him to secure a regular starting position.

Asensio, who has won 17 trophies with Real Madrid, has been mainly used as a squad player in recent seasons, contributing 24 goals and 10 assists in 4106 minutes of play across the last two campaigns, with the majority of his appearances coming off the bench.

He was highly linked with a move to Anfield but Jurgen Klopp decided to pursue Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister for a bargain fee.
