Canadian Striker Linked With A Surprise Move To Chelsea

Several reports claim that Jonathan David of Lille to join Chelsea before the end of the summer transfer window. Chelsea are said to be prepared to provide tough competition in the race, which is being closely checked by Serie A giants Napoli.

Jonathan David

David has been a very important member of Lille since joining the team for €30 million in 2020 after leaving the club Gent. In his first season there, he scored 13 goals, which helped Lille win the Ligue 1 championship.

Jonathan David scored 15 goals the next season and performed well continuously, scoring 24 goals in the 2022–2023 season, which accounted for 37% of Lille’s goals, despite finishing in 10th place the previous season.

Lille must choose between selling Jonathan David this summer or risk losing him for free in 2025 when his contract expires since he has scored over 15 goals so far this season and only has one year remaining on his deal.

There have long been rumours regarding a Premier League move for the Canada international and Jonathan David is expected to depart at the end of the season.

The Canadian international acknowledged that the reports linking him to Chelsea and other teams “flattered” him. “When you’re young, these are the clubs you watch and think about,” David said. “It’s flattering, I appreciate that.”

It remains to be seen if any improvements have been made for the Blues since signing Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku last summer. Nkunku has missed almost the whole season with a lot of injuries and Jackson has been both a success and failure at the same time.

David is reportedly one of the names on the Blues’ priority list of strikers they want to sign in the summer to make things more stable.

Over the last few seasons, Lille has valued him at around £50 million; however, they may be willing to lower their asking price this time.

The agent of striker Jonathan David of Lille, Nikos Mavromaras, was photographed in Italy on 8th April 2024, which fueled rumours of his potential transfer to Milan or Napoli.

So, if Chelsea ends up buying Osimhen from Napoli, then they will have enough money to sign David.
