Former Liverpool star Dean Saunders has revealed the Guinean midfielder Naby Keita has the potential to become one of the best players in England’s top flight.
Keita arrived at Anfield last summer transfer window in a £50 million deal from Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzig with a heavy reputation. But it was hardly a debut season to remember for the 24-year-old as his debut campaign was plagued with injuries and poor form unable to live up to the high expectation.
However, there were occasions when Keita was able to display his magic and that showed the Merseyside faithful the reason why there was so much hype surrounding the midfield gem.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp does have quite a few talented midfielders at his disposal in the form of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri, Jordan Henderson and even Harry Wilson in the attacking third and Keita will have to prove his worth if he is going to nail down a regular starting berth for the Reds.
But 55-year-old Dean Saunders believes that Keita has some top quality that needs to be unleashed and if he stays fit and injury-free. The Welshman spoke to talkSPORT and explained, “Keita looked to me as if he could be one of the best players in the league at some point in the future. He’s had a few injuries, showed flashes of brilliance, but I’m hoping this season that he can kick on now.”
Keita managed to start only 22 games across all competitions for Liverpool in his debut season with the club but inherited the legendary number 8 jersey which was previously worn by club talisman Steven Gerrard.
