Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the Reds will need to call upon Xherdan Shaqiri at some point of the season despite the Swiss star unable to get regular football at the moment.
Shaqiri arrived at Liverpool last summer in a shock move from Stoke City when the Merseyside club paid £13.5 million for his services following the relegation of the Potters into the Championship. In his debut season with Liverpool, the 27-year-old managed 30 appearances across all competitions scoring six goals and notching up five assists as well.
But due to the terrifying trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in the Liverpool front line, Shaqiri has been restricted to appearances from the bench on most occasions. But German manager Jurgen Klopp has explained that the Reds will have to call upon Shaqiri at some point in the season as he has even decided to snub his national side in order to spend more time training with Liverpool.
Klopp praised the attacker and said despite the lack of regular football Shaqiri is showing great professionalism and the 52-year-old is certain that Liverpool will need the Swiss talisman at some point, “Shaq is training well, and that’s the situation. It’s the first four weeks of the season, that’s how it is. That’s probably the hardest period for players who are not [playing]. In training, Shaq doesn’t have to improve in any way if he can keep the level he is doing at the moment. Of course, he can improve like how everybody can improve, but it’s not about that – he doesn’t have to show anything special. We will need him, he knows that 100 percent”
