The Wijnaldum Conundrum

When fans rave about Liverpool they usually talk about the front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino or more recently Liverpool’s defense with Van Dijk and the full backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool’s front three deserve the accolades they recieve, they have been impeccable in both scoring and creating goals.

The defense also have been brilliant with Van Dijk in the center of things, he has also been mooted to win the Ballon d’Or this year and rightfully so.

But Liverpool’s midfield consisting of mainly Henderson, Wijnaldum and Fabinho have probably not got the credit they deserve in the past. Many pundits have said in the past that Liverpool’s midfield lack creativity but that is probably not what Klopp expects from his midfielders.

One midfielder who has definitely gone under the radar is Wijnaldum, the Dutch International was impressive for his country against Estonia in their Euro 2020 qualifier. wrapping up a 4-0 victory with a close-range header three minutes from time.

The 28-year-old also got an assist in the win and in the past has shown for his country that he can be a creative force.

For Liverpool, The star has often been deployed as a disciplined central midfield player, but obviously has the ability to help out further up the field.

Wijnaldum who signed for Liverpool for 23 million pounds in 2016 is one of the most under-rated players in the world and he will wonder what more he needs to do to prove his doubters wrong.

Klopp has been known to favor a 4-3-3 system where the wingers act as inside forwards and the full backs provide the width, in order for this system to work the midfield needs to wrk to cover the spaces vacated by the full backs bombing forward.

Wijnaldum is effective for the usual Liverpool system but perhaps his offerings in the final third should be considered by Klopp if his side is struggling to break a team down.
