Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has stated that Steven Gerrard would probably be the only player that he would love to play with after Zinedine Zidane.
Owen had the luxury of playing alongside some stellar names in world football during his career when he represented Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. But the former England striker has named only one player who could come close to the legendary Frenchman and it was his former Liverpool compatriot Steven Gerrard.
The 39-year-old recently released his own book recently and spoke to BBC regarding some of the finest players he played alongside. Former Real Madrid and French midfielder Zinedine Zidane was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch but Owen stated that he would take only Steven Gerrard to battle if he ever needed to.
Owen said that former Liverpool talisman Steven Gerrard had the ability to do almost everything on the football pitch, “I played with some great players – Zinedine Zidane was off the scale in terms of natural ability. But, if I was playing the biggest game of my life tomorrow, the first person I’d probably take into battle would be Stevie. He could do everything. He was massive, his stride was huge and he just used to devour ground. He was too big and too strong for his opponents, an amazing passer of the ball, he could dribble, score goals, defend, tackle and head.”
Owen also explained that he had a bit of a sixth sense relationship with Gerrard calling the 39-year-old one of the best English players ever, “We were big mates. I joined Liverpool at 11 and we played in the same team right the way through. We just grew up playing alongside each other. We know each other’s games possibly more so than anyone else. We had that sixth sense between us. I think he’s genuinely one of the best England payers to have lived.”
