Current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wants former club talisman Steven Gerrard to succeed him as the manager at Anfield.
Gerrard took up a youth coaching role with Liverpool back in January 2017, having retired from playing the year before after a short spell with LA Galaxy in the MLS.
The 39-year-old former England captain then secured his first senior management job in May last year when he replaced Graeme Murty as Rangers manager, and he has impressed during his time in Scotland.
Having steered Liverpool to Champions League glory in the summer and a second place in the Premier League last term Jurgen Klopp’s current contract with the club runs out in the summer of 2022 and the German has left the doors open for his future.
However, when Klopp does decide to leave Anfield, the 52-year-old admitted that he wants Gerrard to return to his boyhood club to take over the reins
Klopp told reporters at FourTwoFour that Gerrard will be the appropriate candidate to take up the job at Liverpool after he leaves because he would like to help the former Liverpool midfielder as much as he can, “If Liverpool were to sack me tomorrow, then maybe Kenny [Dalglish] would be the first choice to replace me, but they would probably bring Stevie down from Glasgow. If you ask who should follow me, I’d say Stevie. I help him whenever I can. If someone gets your job, it’s not about them, it’s about you not being good enough. I’m old enough to know that I give this job everything. I’m not a genius, I’m not perfect, but I give the club 100 percent. If that’s enough, great. If it’s not, then it’s just the problem of the situation”
