Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has urged the Liverpool players and fans not to ‘get carried away’ by Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season.
Liverpool increased the gap at the top of the table to 8 points last weekend when they beat Leicester City 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time penalty by James Milner. Manchester City meanwhile suffered their second defeat of the season when they were stunned by a counter-attacking Wolves side at the Etihad.
The shock result meant that Manchester City is now eight points behind Liverpool and has looked shaky in defense with the absence of Aymeric Laporte with a long term injury.
Jamie Carragher who played in defense for Liverpool for 17 years believes that Liverpool could find themselves in a similar situation if keys players suffer injuries.
‘I think what we are seeing with Man City now is they are being affected by injuries now in the same position and that’s a problem for them,’ Carragher told talkSPORT. ‘That’s a problem for anyone even though they have got a better squad than Liverpool and you see how much it is hurting them. You may actually think it would hurt Liverpool more if they injuries because, as I said, they don’t quite the squad City have. But to be fair, Man City have problems where they are weakest, at center-back, in terms of numbers and quality. The Liverpool hero added: ‘But there is no doubt a big injury to a big Liverpool player will severely hinder them. So that’s why I don’t think anyone really at Liverpool is getting too carried away.”
Liverpool faces Manchester United at Old Trafford after the International break with United facing a crisis after their loss against Newcastle United.
A win would mean that Liverpool will equal Manchester City’s record of 18 consecutive wins the Premier League.
