Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has tipped Steven Gerrard to become Jurgen Klopp’s long-term successor at Liverpool once the German boss decides to leave his role as head coach of Liverpool.
Gerrard is currently enjoying his first managerial role at Rangers and is bidding to end Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football.
His great work at Rangers has even prompted Jurgen Klopp to suggest that Gerrard can succeed him in Liverpool.
Klopp’s contract runs to 2022 and, although ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard has long been tipped to take over at the Kop helm one day, the former England midfielder hopes no Anfield vacancy arises for some time.
And while his status as a Reds legend will put him in good stead, Carragher insists that he’d get the job because of his achievements, rather than just his legacy.
‘With managers, it’s all about timing, really,’ Carragher told The Mirror. ‘Who knows when Jurgen Klopp is going to go?
‘Stevie could be having a difficult time here, he could be somewhere else or he could be absolutely flying at Rangers and people are thinking he’s made for the Liverpool job.
‘Stevie will be in the reckoning because he is Steven Gerrard. But more importantly, because he is doing really well as a manager.
‘There’s no doubt that the more experiences he has will enhance him in his managerial career, but there’s nothing to say he couldn’t go straight from Rangers to Liverpool.
Gerrard’s Rangers are currently top of the Scottish Premiership, leading Celtic by two points as they attempt to win the title for the first time since 2011.
Liverpool meanwhile is currently top of the Premier League and are 8 points ahead of closest rivals Manchester City.
