Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reserved special praise for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the midfielder marked his return to the Champions League with two well-taken goals.
The 26-year-old scored his first two goals of the season in some style, netting from similar positions just outside the area, but with completely contrasting techniques. The first he rolled in with his in-step into the bottom corner, the second he curled with the outside of his boot, crashing the ball off the underside of the crossbar.
But Klopp has insisted that Chamberlain can do much better
‘It was absolutely a great moment for him, but I would say with Ox his performance was exactly the same as the performance of the team – the goals were great but all the rest could have been better,‘ said Klopp.
‘That’s how it is, but it’s no problem. The (second) goal was sensational and very important for us. Wonderful.
‘On Sunday, Adam (Lallana) scored the goal, and now Ox has scored two goals. It’s really nice. Absolutely great, a great story.’
Alex Oxlade–Chamberlain suffered multiple serious injuries to his knee and hamstring in a collision with Aleksandar Kolarov in Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma and missed an entire year of football recovering from the injury.
Klopp has been a huge admirer of English international and will hope that Chamberlain can stay fit for the full season particularly with the Liverpool’s midfield lacking creativity and goals and have sometimes been over-reliant on the front three for inspiration upfront
