Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has admitted that it was disappointing to watch his fellow clubmate Joe Gomez being booed by his England fans during the international break last week.
Gomez was shockingly booed by the Three Lions fans when he came on as a substitute during England’s 7-0 win against Montenegro earlier this week and the Liverpool center-back was left devastated by the actions of his own set of fans and was spoken to by English manager Gareth Southgate after the match.
Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling and Gomez had been involved in a training ground incident earlier in the week and had to be pulled apart by other teammates in the national squad. The incident led to the Sterling being out of the squad for the win against Montenegro and he was spotted in the stands during the game.
However, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has now come out in defense of his club teammate, stating that it was disappointing to see what happened at Wembley. The 28-year-old explained that everyone needs to move on and leave Gomez alone instead of attacking him, “It’s disappointing to see. I want to say as well it’s been dealt with. I think everyone should stop talking about it because it’s just a thing that happened. They all sorted it out. Everyone needs to move on, leave Joe especially alone. But yes, it was disappointing to see.”
Liverpool are currently sitting at the summit of the Premier League table at the moment and are in the hunt for their first Premier League title in 30 years.
