Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson explained that the Reds were frustrated not to “finish the job” in Champions’ League Group E when they drew 1-1 against Serie A side Napoli at Anfield on Wednesday.
The Merseyside giants wanted a win at Anfield to confirm their place in the knockout stages with a game to spare, which would also guarantee top spot in their group but at the end of ninety minutes a 1-1 draw was all the Premier League leaders could manage as Dejan Lovren’s header canceled out Dries Mertens opening goal in the first half.
The result leaves Group E firmly in the balance, with Liverpool needing to avoid defeat in their final match against Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg to send themselves and Napoli through to the next round of the European competition.
However, a defeat against Salzburg along with Napoli beating Genk would see the Champions League holders drop into the Europa League and out of the prestigious competition.
But English midfielder Jordan Henderson insists that the Premier League leaders can still feel full of confidence heading to Salzburg on December 10 with their destiny in their own hands. While speaking to BT Sport, the 29 year old explained, “We’d have liked to have won, of course, to finish the job [qualification for last 16] but Napoli are a good side and we could only get a point, I think we’re still in a decent position, but there’s one game left and we need to go and get a win away now.”
It should be a relatively tough game at Salzburg as the opposing team caused a few scares for Liverpool in the game at Anfield which required a Salah goal to settle the seven-goal thriller.
