Reds captain Jordan Henderson lamented Liverpool’s missed chances after a 2-3 stunning loss against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 on Wednesday.
Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum’s header had brought the hosts level in the tie before Roberto Firmino’s extra-time goal at Anfield got the Champions League holders on track to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
However, a brace from substitute Marcos Llorente thanks to two howlers from Adrian in the Liverpool goal as well as and Alvaro Morata’s late goal lifted Atletico to a 2-3 win and 4-2 on aggregate.
But Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson rued his side’s missed opportunities, having taken 34 shots at Atletico’s goal and hit the crossbar through Andy Robertson’s header in the second half of regulation time.
The 30-year-old midfielder opened up on the Champions League exit and stated that any lapse in concentration can cost a team elimination. Any mistake or lapse in concentration can cost you, and like I say we’re really disappointed with the result overall, With the position that we’re in, to concede the goals we did, we’re disappointed and we have to take it on the chin.”
Henderson showered praise on Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak for making great saves but insisted that Liverpool should have taken their chances,”[Jan] Oblak made some great saves, but we created so many chances to score, and obviously couldn’t kill the game off.”
Despite the loss and Champions League knock-out, Henderson was pleased with the way his team played against an Atletico side prepared to sit deep in defence and hit the English giants on the counter-attack.
