According to Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany, Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk is the best centre back in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old Van Dijk has starred for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds since his move from south coast side Southampton to Liverpool, for a reported transfer fee of £75 million that took place in January 2018.
The Dutch star finished second only to Barcelona talisman to Lionel Messi for the Ballon d’Or award last year despite having helped Liverpool win the Champions League in June.
Van Dijk has also been monumental in guiding Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table this season as the Merseyside giants hold a staggering 25 point lead over 2nd placed Manchester City. And former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, currently as player-manager at Belgian club Anderlecht believes that Van Dijk is the best centre-back in the history of the Premier
While speaking to SPORF, Kompany explained why he felt Van Dijk would surpass legends such as John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, “I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, It’s a weird one because he hasn’t been on the scene for as long as these names we mentioned – John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, these guys were there for a long, long time. But the signs he showed in his last few years, just makes it so obvious that if he would’ve been at the top, top-level before that he would’ve been already further as well.”

The Belgian defender further added that Van Dijk’s impact on the team has been phenomenal over the past few seasons, “From what I’ve seen in terms of having an impact on a team and a defender is never about himself, it’s about his communication with other guys and how you make your team more solid. The Liverpool before Van Dijk and the one after him, it’s a completely different setup and I’ll give him that one because of that.”
