Lucas Leiva has no regrets on leaving Liverpool following ‘unhappy stint’ at Anfield

Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva revealed that he has no regrets at having brought a decade-long spell with Liverpool to an end in 2017, with the Brazilian admitting that he “wasn’t happy” at the Premier League club just before Jurgen Klopp’s methods started to pay dividends.

Lucas made an astonishing  346 appearances for Liverpool throughout his ten-year spell at Anfield, opted to take on a new challenge at Serie A outfit Lazio when an exit door opened on Merseyside.

Only a year after the 33-year-old left the club, Liverpool booked their spot in the Champions League with Real Madrid. Admittedly, Liverpool endured heartbreak in Kyiv, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds came back and won the European title the following season. The UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup crown followed later in 2019.

Lucas might have had the feeling that he walked away from Liverpool a little too soon, but he insists that is not the case due to his time in England ending in a rather unhappy manner.

Although Lucas admits that he and his kids are now Liverpool fans, there was a time that he was unhappy at the club,  “The year after I left, we lost in the [Champions League] final. I met the boys here in Rome [for the 2018 semi-final]. But, of course, [to win it] I was really happy, to be honest. My son, my family, we are Liverpool fans now. It’s a great achievement and I’m just really happy because so many people there I am still in touch with and still care a lot about. Of course, you always think, ‘Had I waited one more year…’ but, to be honest, I wasn’t happy. When you are not happy it makes no sense so, to be honest, it’s better I see Liverpool winning and I’m happy as well playing. As a fan, I’m really happy. Of course, I would like to have won it but I won it as a fan, let’s say.”

It seems that Lucas would have missed out on winning the Premier League title as well as Liverpool are currently 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. However, Lucas saw his game time at Liverpool reduce drastically due to the new arrivals at the club under Klopp’s reign.
