Liverpool midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum has admitted that he even though club captain Jordan Henderson can be annoying the English star means well for his teammates and only wants what’s best for the club as a whole.
Recently awarded Player of the Year Jordan Henderson has donned the captain’s armband at Anfield ever since Steven Gerrard left the club in 2015. During that time, the English midfielder has come under plenty of criticism but also earned plenty of plaudits for his leadership qualities displayed during a renaissance period for the Merseyside club over the past few seasons.
Under Henderson’s leadership at Liverpool the Premier League giants have tasted success in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup last year.
This season, Liverpool have stormed the Premier League and currently sit at the top of the English top division table by a staggering 25 points. The Reds are only six points away from their first Premier League title in 30 years and club captain Jordan Henderson has been a vital cog in pushing Liverpool towards such an incredible run.
Despite coming under heavy criticism over the past few seasons, Henderson has transformed into a superb player and an even better captain for the Reds.
Dutch midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum revealed that even though Henderson can take things a bit too far from time to time, the 29-year-old has a great understanding with his teammates and only wants what is best for the team as a whole.
While speaking to Sky Sports, the 29-year-old compared Henderson to other captains he has played with in the past, “I’ve played with a few players who have great leadership, I have to say Kevin Strootman and Jordan Henderson were, I think, above the other ones. Mark Van Bommel was also a good leader and a good captain, but out of the three of them, I have to choose Henderson. It can be annoying [when he is motivating players on the pitch], but if you think about why he’s doing it, it’s only to help you as a person and the team so if you think about it in that way, you always appreciate it so we are really happy with the way Henderson is.”
